I recently had an appointment with Dr. K regarding nerve pain that I've been experiencing since my knee replacement surgery about 5 years ago. While I appreciate the effort of the medical team, I felt that the experience left much to be desired, particularly in terms of communication and care.
The appointment felt rushed, and I was disappointed by the lack of explanation regarding the issue with my knee. Dr. K spent more time explaining the situation to a resident rather than to me, which left me feeling uncertain about my condition. Additionally, the treatment recommendation was given with little to no explanation—simply stating that it would take 45 minutes without elaborating on what exactly would be done or why it was necessary.
I understand that the medical team is busy, but as the surgeon who performed my knee replacement, I believe Dr. K should have taken the time to explain what was going on with my knee and the treatment being recommended. I would have appreciated more clarity and a thorough discussion of my options.
I do want to note that the Physician Assistant (PA) in the room was more attentive and engaged, which I appreciated. Dr. K was pleasant. As a patient, you can feel when someone is in a hurry. However, it was the surgeon I was hoping to hear from directly regarding my treatment plan.*

My recent hip replacement surgery consultation with Dr. Karas revealed that he is “patient-centered” and genuinely cares about building trust. Instead of unilaterally deciding that I need to immediately began steroid injections, as I was recently advised by another orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Karas listened to my concerns and interests and carefully explained the benefits and risks of every option available to me. He respected my views and was not adversed to shared decision-making. His treatment plan included my preference for “non-pharmacological interventions” for pain management, inflammation and reclaiming my mobility. I’m overwhelmingly impressed with my experience at Midwest Orthopedics at Rush and implore others to consult with them for comprehensive musculoskeletal care.

His bedside manners were impeccable. My experience was flawless. I always knew what was next and what my tasks were. Pre and post op orders were clear. Post op there were daily texts from Dr. Karas about where I was in the process and how to handle. The entire team were always knowledgeable and so nice. I’m very grateful to Dr. Karas and his team.*
